How to Know You Are Walking in the Spirit – 17 Clear Signs

Walking in the Spirit means surrendering your whole life to the leadings and guidance of the Holy Spirit. This brings great blessing and fruitfulness into our lives. It is key for every believer who wants to live a life that pleases God. But how can we know for sure if we are truly walking in the Spirit? The Bible gives us clear signs that indicate whether we are walking according to the Holy Spirit or not. In this practical and easy-to-understand guide, we will learn 17 clear signs from the Bible that indicate we are walking in the Spirit.

1. The Character of Christ is Evident in You

The first and most telling sign of walking in the Spirit is the character of Christ being produced in your life.

As Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) says:

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

The primary fruit of the Spirit is the very character of Jesus. When you walk with the Holy Spirit, He shapes you into the image of Christ.

Do people see the qualities of Jesus evident in your life? Can they see His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control flowing through you?

The more you walk in the Spirit, the more Christlike your character will become. The Holy Spirit’s work is to make us like Jesus.

As 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV) says:

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

So the #1 sign of walking in the Spirit is having the character of Christ formed in you. Is the fruit of the Spirit – Jesus’ very character – evident in your life?

2. You Have a Bold Witness for Christ

A second sign that you are walking in the Spirit is that you will have a boldness to be a witness for Jesus Christ.

Acts 1:8 (NLT) says:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

When you walk in step with the Holy Spirit, He empowers you and stirs you to proclaim the Gospel with boldness. You have a passion to make Jesus known wherever you go.

Rather than shy away from opportunities to share your faith, you lean into them with the confidence that the Holy Spirit will give you the words to say (Luke 12:11-12).

You are not afraid to let people know you are a follower of Jesus. You want His light to shine through you for others walking in the darkness.

This bold witness is a key sign of walking in the power of the Holy Spirit. Is sharing your faith in Jesus natural for you, or does fear hold you back? Let the Spirit empower you to be His bold witness every day!

3. You Have a Deep Conviction for Your Own Sin

A third sign that the Holy Spirit is active in your life is that you will develop a deep disdain for your own sin. You hate the sin in your life.

Galatians 5:17 (NLT) says:

The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other…

When you walk in the Spirit, His righteous desires battle the fleshly desires within you. Sin grieves your born-again spirit, because the Holy Spirit lives within you.

You may battle with sinful habits or thought patterns. But the fact that you see them as a battle is evidence of the Spirit’s work in you! He is convicting you, training you to despise what offends God.

As you walk closer with the Holy Spirit, He will shed more and more light on areas that need to change in your life. You will feel more conviction over small sins that you used to tolerate or ignore.

This is all part of the Holy Spirit growing you into maturity. He is revealing His holy standard, training you to hate what God hates.

So if you have an intense distaste for the sin in your own life, that is a sign the Holy Spirit is active and working within you!

4. You Walk in God’s Power and Authority

A fourth sign of walking in the Spirit is that you will begin to walk in a new dimension of God’s power and authority.

Acts 1:8 (NLT) declares:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere…

The Holy Spirit desires to move through you in power. When you yield to Him fully, He will use you to heal the sick, cast out demons, prophesy words from God, and release miracles.

You will also grow in authority over the powers of darkness, being able to take authority in Jesus’ name to drive out spiritual opposition. Rather than being bullied by demonic powers, you can boldly cast them out (Luke 10:19).

Of course, these supernatural manifestations are not just for show. As we discussed already, their purpose is for advancing the Gospel through you.

Still, if you walk closely with the Holy Spirit, His power and authority will flow through your life in greater measure. His gifts and miracles will operate through you to bless others and display God’s reality.

So ask the Spirit to stir you in His gifts and empower you to be His vessel!

5. You Have Radical Faith and Obedience

A fifth sign of walking in the Spirit is that you will demonstrate radical faith and obedience to God.

The Holy Spirit will frequently lead you to take bold steps of faith that require supernatural trust in God. He will call you to act outside of your comfort zone.

When you say “Yes” to these promptings, you are walking in radical faith and obedience to the Spirit.

For example, the Holy Spirit may prompt you to:

  • Give a large financial gift beyond your means
  • Share the Gospel with a total stranger
  • Step away from security into full-time ministry
  • Go on missions to a third-world nation

These leaps of obeying faith demonstrate your sensitivity to the Spirit’s leading. You are willing to follow Him even when it seems risky or radical.

Keep in mind the story of Abraham, who obeyed God’s call to sacrifice his only son Isaac – the son of promise (Genesis 22). Abraham’s heart was fully yielded to God. He trusted God so deeply that he obeyed even the most extreme command.

When you walk in the Spirit, you too will demonstrate this depth of obedient faith. You will go wherever He leads, give whatever He asks, and say whatever He tells you to.

Radical obedience flows from those who are in step with the Holy Spirit.

6. You Have Strong Spiritual Discernment

Another sign of walking in the Spirit is that you will have strong discernment to distinguish truth from error.

1 Corinthians 2:15 (NLT) says:

Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others.

The Holy Spirit gives you an ability to discern between His voice and the enemy’s voice. You can tell what is from God versus what is fake or deceitful.

This discernment protects you from deception and enables you to see through lies( meaning lies cannot blind you, read 2 Corinthians 4:4) . You recognize faulty teaching and toxic associations that you should avoid.

You are able to know the “wolves in sheep’s clothing” and false doctrines. When you hear teaching, you can pick up on whether or not it aligns with Scripture and the Spirit of God.

Because you have the “mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16), you can evaluate everything you take in through the lens of God’s truth.

This strong discernment is one of the important signs of walking intimately with the Holy Spirit. He trains your spiritual senses to distinguish His voice from all others.

7. You Have a Passion for God’s Word

A seventh sign that the Holy Spirit is active in you is that you will have a passion and hunger for the Word of God.

Psalm 119:11 says:

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

As you walk in the Spirit, He gives you a desire to be in Scripture, to listen to biblical teaching, and to surround yourself with God’s Word.

You don’t have to force yourself to read the Bible. You have a genuine hunger driving you into the Word because the Spirit within you craves it.

The words on the pages come alive to you as the Holy Spirit illuminates them with insight, revelation and conviction. You can’t get enough of God’s Word! This passion for Scripture is one of the surest signs of the Holy Spirit’s activity in a believer’s life.

8. Experiencing God’s Favor

God’s favor refers to when God supernaturally blesses our lives in special ways. It’s like God gives us extra help or opens up opportunities for us. For example, God might connect us to certain people who can help us, or open doors for new jobs, ministries, relationships, etc.

This doesn’t mean everything will be easy or go perfectly. But even during hard times, we’ll see God’s favor and blessing in unlikely ways.

Let’s say someone loses their job. This is a difficult situation. But with God’s favor, they randomly run into an old friend a week later who works at an amazing new company hiring for a better position. The friend puts in a good word, and they get the job!

Or let’s say someone has been praying for a spouse for years without much success. But suddenly they meet a great guy or girl in an unexpected place, quickly hit it off, and end up dating.

These are examples of God’s favor – his undeserved blessing and influence opening doors supernaturally. Often it comes through divinely positioned people or unlikely circumstances we couldn’t orchestrate on our own.

We can increase God’s favor by drawing closer to him and following the Holy Spirit leadings. The more we know and obey God, the more favor starts opening up. It’s evidence of his blessing on our obedience.

So ask yourself – have you seen unlikely doors opening, helpful people divinely placed in your life, or blessings you can’t explain? If so, it’s likely God’s favor! If not, then focusing on your relationship with him can start unlocking more of his supernatural blessing.

9. Confidence in Your Salvation

When we put our faith in Jesus to save us, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside our hearts. The Bible calls this being “born again” or becoming a new creation.

The Holy Spirit confirms to our spirit that we belong to God. He gives us an inner assurance that we have been adopted into God’s family forever.

It’s like the Holy Spirit puts a seal or stamp on our lives marking us the children of God. Ephesians 1:13-14 explains it this way:

“When you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, who is God’s guarantee that he will give us everything he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people.”

So when you are walking closely with the Holy Spirit each day, your confidence in your salvation and relationship with God grows stronger. You become more firmly rooted in your identity as God’s beloved child. Doubt and uncertainty fade away.

This doesn’t mean you’ll be perfect. We all still struggle with sin at times. But the Holy Spirit gives assurance that your standing before God is secure. He reminds you that your eternity is safe in Christ, no matter what happens.

So if you have struggled with confidence in your salvation, simply listen more to the Holy Spirit within you. Draw near to Him through prayer and Bible study. As you cooperate with Him daily, He will confirm and give you peace in your spirit about belonging forever to Jesus.

You can ask yourself questions like:

  • Do I know without any doubt that I am a beloved child of God?
  • Or does uncertainty, fear, or confusion plague me?

Use your responses to evaluate your closeness with the Holy Spirit. Let it inspire you to yield even more to Him each day.

10. You Have a Growing Desire for Spiritual Things

When you walk in the spirit, your desires begin to change. You no longer desire sinful things, but you begin to desire spiritual things. For example, you will desire to:

  • Read the Bible and understand it
  • Pray regularly
  • Go to church
  • Worship and praise God
  • Use your gifts to serve God and help others

You simply have a growing hunger for more of God and spiritual things. Your priorities in life will shift from seeking after worldly possessions and fame to seeking after God’s kingdom. Material things no longer dominate you because God has become your primary desire.

“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2).

So a growing desire for the things of God shows the Spirit is actively leading you and you are responding correctly by walking in the spirit.

11. You Experience Victory Over Sin

One of the clearest signs that you are walking in the spirit is that you will experience consistent victory over sin. Romans 8:13 says, “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” This tells us that when we walk in the spirit, we will put to death or have victory over the sinful deeds of the body.

For example, if you used to struggle with p*rn*graphy but since you started walking in the spirit you hardly watch it anymore and have self-control, it is a sign you are walking in the spirit. Or if you used to have a bad temper that resulted in regular fights, but now you have patience and self-control, this victory shows the Holy Spirit is at work in you.

The Holy Spirit empowers believers to say no to sin. So consistent victory over sinful habits is a sure sign of walking in the spirit.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh…” (Galatians 5:16-17).

12. You Understand Spiritual Truths

The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth (John 16:13). So when you walk in the Spirit, you will have discernment, wisdom and understanding concerning spiritual truths. Spiritual issues and teachings that you never understood before will become clear to you.

For example, Bible passages that didn’t make sense before will suddenly become alive and full of meaning. Truths about salvation, eternity, God’s kingdom and other deep spiritual realities will begin to make sense. This understanding comes from the Holy Spirit who reveals such truths to those who walk in him.

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2:14).

Additionally, you will have discernment to know false teachings that don’t align with Scripture. The Holy Spirit leads us to all truth and helps us recognize lies and deception. So increased spiritual understanding is a sure sign you are walking in the Spirit and maturing in your faith.

13. You Display the Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23 shares the fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in the life of believers:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…”

This describes the nature and character of God which the Holy Spirit develops in us.

So another way to know you are walking in the spirit is that you will display this fruit more consistently such as:

  • Love – You are loving God more and also loving people sacrificially.
  • Joy – You have inner joy and peace even in hard times.
  • Peace – You are not anxious but have emotional stability.
  • Patience – You are slow to anger and tolerate difficult people/situations.
  • Kindness – You have a kind, compassionate attitude even to enemies.
  • Goodness – You desire to do the right things and make ethical choices.
  • Faithfulness – You are dependable, loyal and keep your word.
  • Gentleness – You are gentle, humble, mild, meek and not pushy.
  • Self-Control – You have mastery over sinful habits and passions.

If people close to you notice these virtues displayed consistently in your character, it shows the Spirit is producing his fruit in you – a mark of walking in the spirit.

14. You Use Your Spiritual Gifts

Every Christian has spiritual gifts given by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). These gifts are meant for serving others and building up God’s kingdom.

When you walk in the spirit, you will discover your spiritual gifts and consistently desire to serve others through them. For example, if you have the gift of encouragement, you will desire to inspire and motivate people on a regular basis. Or if you have a teaching gift, you will use opportunities to share God’s truth with others.

Using your spiritual gift is evidence of the Spirit’s leading in your life. So take a spiritual gift survey test and ask other Christians what gifts they see in your life. Then actively serve through those gifts out of love for God and others.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).

15. You Have a Burden for Evangelism & Missions

When you walk in step with the Spirit, you will align with his priorities and burdens for more people to be saved. The Holy Spirit desires for every single person to have salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9).

So if you have a growing burden and zeal for evangelism and missions, it shows the Spirit’s influence and direction in your life. You will enthusiastically share your faith, support overseas missionaries, pray for the lost and give towards spreading the gospel worldwide. It will grieve your spirit anytime someone dies without knowing Christ.

This evangelistic burden motivated by the Spirit may even lead to leaving your comfort zone and going to the mission field. When this happens, it’s a clear sign you are walking in the Spirit.

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace…” (Romans 10:14-15).

16. You Experience the Spirit’s Guidance

The Holy Spirit actively guides and directs the steps of those who walk in him. As you fill your mind with Scripture and pray about decisions in your life, the Spirit will lead you on the right path to take that glorifies God.

For example, the Spirit may guide you to take a new job, move locations, join a Bible study, reconcile with an offended friend, start a ministry, etc. As you follow his leading, your life will produce more fruitfulness to advance God’s kingdom.

However, don’t expect to hear an audible voice when the Spirit leads. Often his guidance comes as a subtle inner witness or prompting about the wise action to take according to Scripture. But as you consistently obey his voice, your ability to sense his leading grows stronger and more direction comes.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God” (Romans 8:14).

So if you have examples of the Spirit’s clear guidance recently that led to spiritual fruitfulness, it’s evidence you are walking in him. Apply this principle moving forward by praying and asking the Spirit to guide your everyday decisions, no matter how small it is.

17. You Have Victory in Spiritual Battles

Walking in the power of the Holy Spirit enables you to have victory when facing attacks from Satan and demons. Scripture reminds us “the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). So you don’t fight spiritual battles in your own strength but through the Spirit’s power.

In Conclusion: Let These Signs Direct Your Walk

Staying closely connected to the Holy Spirit should be the most important priority for every follower of Jesus. We desperately need the Spirit’s power and guidance every day!

Regularly comparing our life’s “fruit” or results against these 17 signs is so important. This allows us to evaluate how closely we are actually walking with the Holy Spirit.

When we examine our lives, these signs help reveal areas needing growth or change. For example, maybe we don’t see much “fruit” of godly character. Or perhaps we struggle with confidence in our salvation. This indicates room to improve in walking with the Spirit.

Once we identify problem areas, we can yield those specific parts of life more fully to the Spirit’s work. We allow Him greater access through prayer, Bible study, and practical obedience.

As we surrender and obey Him daily, the Holy Spirit’s power transforms us to be more like Jesus. This is how He bears good fruit through our lives and advances God’s Kingdom on earth.

So here is the choice before every believer:

Will you commit to connect and cooperate with the Holy Spirit in a fresh way starting today? Will you open your whole self to His presence and humbly follow wherever He leads one step at a time?

I invite you to pray from the heart:

“Holy Spirit, I hold nothing back but give You complete access to me. Fill me fresh with Your presence and power. Live through me as never before!”

Praying this prayer sincerely can unlock new depths of fruitfulness and blessing from God. It all starts with saying “Yes!” to walking intimately with the Spirit daily. God Bless You!!
