The Meaning Of Revelation 3:13 – Jesus’ Message To Us

Revelation 3:13 falls within Jesus’ message to the church in Laodicea. This verse provides an important warning for believers to fully commit to following Christ.

Background on the Book of Revelation

The book of Revelation was written by the apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains prophetic visions and messages from God delivered through Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:1).

Revelation addresses seven churches in Asia Minor (Revelation 1:4), including the church in Laodicea. Jesus dictates specific letters to each church through John’s vision.

Jesus’ Message to the Lukewarm Church

In Revelation 3, Jesus addresses the church in Laodicea. He refers to this church as “lukewarm” – neither hot nor cold (Revelation 3:15). Their faith and works were mediocre.

Although the Laodicean church was materially rich, they were spiritually poor (Revelation 3:17). Jesus rebukes them for their complacency and apathy.

Revelation 3:13 Explained

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Revelation 3:13)

This verse closes Jesus’ message to Laodicea with a sobering call to pay attention. The “Spirit” here refers to the Holy Spirit who inspires Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16) and convicts people of sin (John 16:8).

Though Jesus rebuked the Laodiceans, He still extended them grace if they would repent. His warning reinforces the urgency of wholeheartedly following Christ, rather than being complacent or lukewarm.

Dangers of Lukewarm Faith

Throughout Scripture, God makes it clear He wants our full devotion – not half-hearted faith. Lukewarm spirituality is an affront to God.

In Jeremiah 29:13, God says we will find Him when we seek Him with all our heart. James 4:8 tells us to draw near to God, and He will draw near to us.

Jesus also emphasized total commitment to following Him. In Luke 9:62, He states, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

The parable of the sower compares God’s Word to seeds that only thrive in good soil – representing someone who hears and understands God’s Word.

Revelation 3:16 gives a grave warning about lukewarm faith:

“So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”

Making excuses and remaining complacent in your walk with God is dangerous. He wants your whole heart and life, not lip service.

How to Avoid Lukewarm Faith

Here are some tips to keep your faith fiery and avoid lukewarmness:

  • Pray daily – Developing a consistent prayer life shows your dependence on God (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
  • Read Scripture – God’s Word increases your wisdom and equips you for righteousness (Psalm 119:105).
  • Fellowship regularly – Attending church provides encouragement from other believers (Hebrews 10:24-25).
  • Serve faithfully – Using your gifts builds up the church and keeps you engaged (1 Peter 4:10).
  • Give generously – Contributing money and time demonstrates trust in God’s provision (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
  • Share the gospel – Spreading the good news keeps you focused on Christ’s Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

Choose Today to Follow Christ Wholeheartedly

Revelation 3:13 reminds us not to be deaf to the Holy Spirit’s conviction. If He is revealing areas of lukewarmness in your faith, respond promptly.
