Jesus asked his disciples a very important question: “Who do people say I am?” (Matthew 16:15). After 2000 years, people still struggle to answer correctly. Today we’re going to discuss Our Lord Jesus’ identity and how we should respond to him.
The Bible Reveals Jesus as:
1. The Creator
Though Jesus walked this earth, Scripture teaches he made everything.
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)
Jesus fashioned this vast universe we inhabit, from mammoth galaxies to microscopic organisms. He crafted the mountains, seas, and skies. As our Maker, Jesus deserves our worship and allegiance.
2. The Compassionate Healer
During his earthly ministry, Jesus healed the sick, restored sight to the blind, made the lame walk, and showed compassion to outcasts. He met people’s deepest needs.
“When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.” (Matthew 14:14)
Today, Jesus still cares deeply about human suffering – physical, psychological, and spiritual. We must represent him by serving others.
3. The Crucified Savior
Though innocent, Jesus willingly suffered execution on a cross to pay for our sins. He took our punishment so we could be forgiven.
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)
Without Jesus’ sacrifice, we would remain condemned and separated from God. But his death provides salvation freely.
4. The Risen Lord
On the third day after his crucifixion, Jesus rose again, conquering sin and death forever. His resurrection proves he is the Son of God.
“We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.” (Romans 6:9)
The risen Christ empowers believers to live victorious, purposeful lives. Our labor for him is not in vain.
5. The Coming King
Jesus ascended to heaven but promised to return one day to establish his eternal kingdom. He will reward the faithful and punish the wicked.
“This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:11)
Are you ready to meet him? Jesus could return any moment. We must be prepared.
How Should We Respond to Jesus?
In light of who Jesus is, what does he expect from us?
1. Repent of Our Sins
We must confess where we have fallen short of God’s standards and turn from our old, sinful way of life. Jesus calls everyone to repentance.
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17)
Repentance is both an initial step and an ongoing attitude as believers. We all stumble, but must continually return to Jesus.
2. Believe Jesus Died for Our Sins
Faith means trusting that Jesus’ death fully paid for our sins. We can’t earn salvation by good works. It’s only through God’s grace.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Even a small amount of faith placed wholly in Christ saves us. We just have to sincerely believe.
3. Receive Christ as Lord of Our Lives
Surrendering your life to Jesus means letting him take charge. We yield control to follow and obey him from now on.
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
You can begin a relationship with Jesus today by praying to receive him as your Lord and Savior.
4. Live a Life of Obedience
Once we know Jesus, our lives must back up that commitment through obedience. Our actions should increasingly match his.
“Whoever says ‘I know him’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” (1 John 2:4)
The Holy Spirit empowers us to follow Jesus. Our obedience brings him glory.
Will you accept Jesus today based on who Scripture says he is? Don’t delay your response to the Lord.
Common Questions about Following Jesus
Many have questions on the basics of the Christian faith. Here are some frequent ones:
How do I know God hears my prayers?
God promises to hear us when we pray in Jesus’ name. We walk by faith in his word, not feelings.
Why does God allow suffering in the world?
Suffering entered the world because of humankind’s sin. But God can use hardship to build our character as we trust Him. Suffering will end when Jesus returns.
What if I still have doubts?
It’s normal to struggle with some doubts. Keep seeking truth in Scripture. Talk to mature Christians. God will meet you if you sincerely seek him.
How can I resist temptation?
Pray continually for strength. Avoid tempting situations when possible. Stay connected to other believers for support and accountability.
What should I do when I fail?
Repent quickly and receive God’s forgiveness. Use it as a lesson to depend more on the Holy Spirit for help in obeying Jesus.
Don’t delay. Submit to Jesus as Lord today and begin a life-changing relationship with your Creator. He promises abundant life now and eternal life in heaven to all who believe. You can trust him completely.
