Why am I lacking perfect peace?

Finding a perfect peace in this world can be very difficult. With all the chaos, troubles, and worries of life, many Christians still struggle to attain the “perfect peace” that is promised in the Bible.

The Bible says in Isaiah 26:3-4 : “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.” This verse tells us that perfect peace comes from keeping our mind stayed on God and trusting in Him. So what are we missing if we have been Christians for years, yet still lack this peace?

Our minds must be fixed on Jesus

One key element for perfect peace is having our minds fixed on Jesus. When troubles come, it’s easy for our minds to be consumed by anxieties. Our minds quickly get filled with “what ifs” as we consider all the possible negative outcomes. However, Isaiah 26 tells us we must make a conscious, continual effort to set our minds on the Lord.

I still remember a time in my life when I lacked perfect peace. I had lost my job and was in debt. Fear and dread consumed my mind as I worried how I would pay for groceries and medical expenses.

Even though I prayed and asked others for prayer, the anxiety persisted. Sleepless nights left me exhausted, and I still could not rest. I kept obsessing over possible worst-case scenarios.

Finally, I realized I had been trusting God with my lips, but deep down in my heart I’ve been depending on myself. Although I prayed to Him, I did not leave the outcomes in His hands.

In desperation, I opened my Bible and ponded over verses about peace, hope, and trust. Gradually, the Word shifted my mindset. As I meditated on God’s goodness and promises, my faith began to grow. This world is not my home, I reminded myself, and no worry can snatch me from Jesus’ hands.

I pictured placing each concern into God’s capable hands, then visualized turning and walking away. Finally, the peace I had been lacking flooded every corner of my life. My frantic thoughts calmed, and I knew deep within that I would be okay no matter what happened. God had not abandoned me; I had simply forgotten to let Him handle the burden.

In the following days, God provided financial help through caring friends. But more importantly, He restored my shaken trust, teaching me to rest in Him completely. I still have occasional moments of anxiety. Yet now I quicker recognize when peace is missing—it signals that I have taken my eyes off my Lord Jesus Christ. Each time, running back to Jesus renews supernatural peace in my heart. Looking to Him always brings confidence and calm.

Philippians 4:8 gives excellent advice: “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” When we choose each day to dwell on God’s goodness, it brings peace and protects us from debilitating anxiety.

We must surrender our concerns to God

Often, a lack of peace comes from trying to control situations that we were never meant to control. We bear burdens of fear and worry that God never intended for us to carry. Psalm 55:22 encourages, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Rather than worrying, the Bible tells us to pray about everything (Philippians 4:6). Give all your concerns to God in prayer, trusting the results to Him. Let His peace rule in your heart, “for in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority” (Colossians 2:9-10). Surrender control to the One who is over all things.

Our hope must rest fully in eternal life

One of the great barriers to present peace can be setting too much hope and significance on this temporary world. But as Christians, our true hope lies in the world to come.

Titus 1:2 reminds us that we wait “in hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.” Fixing our eyes more fully on Jesus and the home He is preparing for us puts struggles of this life in proper perspective. The trials ahead cannot compare to the future glory awaiting us (Romans 8:18).

Let your mind dwell on John 14:27, which quotes Jesus saying, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Trust that ultimate peace is found in Christ alone. Keep your heart and mind stayed upon Him every single day.

If as Christians our lives still lack true peace, we must daily recommit ourselves to Christ. We must spend more time than ever seeking Him in prayer and in His Word. As we draw close and surrender fully to Him, He fills us with supernatural peace that transcends worldly understanding (Philippians 4:7).

The more we  fix our eyes upon Jesus, the more our faith and trust in Him will grow. And according to Isaiah 26, it is this ever-deepening faith and trust that grants us His perfect peace.

So stay anchored to the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the source of the deep, unshakable peace our hearts truly crave. Keep praying, keep believing, keep your mind centered on Him, and His supernatural peace will be yours.
